Position overview

This role supports the networking and IT side of Northern Skies Communications, including business infrastructure, remote connectivity, server environments, endpoint support, and the technical systems that keep customers operational. This is not a generic help desk role. Applicants should be comfortable with practical infrastructure work and solving real-world business technology problems.

Mission of the role

The mission of this position is to design, support, maintain, and troubleshoot dependable networking and IT systems that meet customer needs in Alaska environments where reliability, scalability, and practical implementation matter more than theory alone.

Key responsibilities

  • Deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot business and customer networking systems
  • Support server, endpoint, and infrastructure environments as needed
  • Provide technical support across Windows, macOS, and Linux systems
  • Support full-scale business infrastructure and commercial customer technical environments
  • Assist with remote connectivity, wireless networking, and RF-linked data transport where applicable
  • Document technical work clearly and communicate with customers professionally

Minimum requirements

  • Strong practical networking and IT troubleshooting ability
  • Ability to work independently and solve problems without excessive supervision
  • Comfort supporting mixed operating system environments
  • Professional discipline, accountability, and customer-facing communication skills
  • Readiness for travel, changing conditions, and field-capable work where necessary

Preferred background

  • Prior military service is strongly preferred, especially communications, networking, IT, or technical support specialties
  • Experience with business networking, server environments, structured technical support, or commercial customer infrastructure is highly preferred
  • Experience with wireless backhaul, long-haul connectivity, or infrastructure-related field deployments is a strong advantage
  • Alaska technical field experience is highly valuable

Professional experience expectation

Applicants should already have meaningful real-world IT and networking experience before applying. This role is intended for applicants who can demonstrate technical maturity, infrastructure awareness, and the ability to support business-critical systems in practical working environments.

Technical scope of work

This role supports a wide range of networking and business infrastructure environments. Applicants should have familiarity with, or strong readiness to work with, the following systems and technologies:

  • Full networking support for business and commercial customers
  • Server and infrastructure support for full-scale business environments
  • Endpoint support across the three major operating systems: Windows, macOS, and Linux
  • Wireless and long-haul data transport systems, including Ubiquiti-based point-to-point and ethernet-over-RF style deployments
  • Commercial customer infrastructure requiring dependable uptime and practical support
  • Integrated technical environments where IT systems and communications systems intersect

Licensing and certifications

  • No single federal license is the baseline gate for this role in the same way as RF or maritime roles
  • Relevant certifications in networking, servers, infrastructure, wireless systems, security, or enterprise support may significantly strengthen an application
  • Applicants should disclose all relevant technical certifications, credentials, and manufacturer-specific experience during the application process
  • Hands-on experience and proven capability are weighted heavily for this role

Alaska preference

Alaska residence and meaningful full-time work experience in Alaska are strongly preferred. Applicants with real-world Alaska technical experience have a significant advantage because they better understand logistics, remote support realities, environmental challenges, and customer expectations across the state.

Out-of-state applicants may still be considered if they can present a strong, credible case for being capable of working in Alaska’s harsh environment on a full-time basis.

Who should not apply

This role is not suited for applicants looking for a basic help desk position, minimal responsibility, or highly repetitive support work. If you are not comfortable with infrastructure-level troubleshooting, mixed technical environments, customer-facing accountability, and field-capable problem solving, this will not be the right fit.

What we are looking for

We are looking for dependable, technically mature professionals who can support business-critical networks and systems, adapt to changing customer environments, work across multiple platforms, and contribute to the long-term technical credibility of the company.
