Position overview

This is a hands-on role for applicants who can work with communications equipment in real-world field environments. The Communications Technician will assist with installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, deployment, and general technical support across systems related to satellite communications, RF infrastructure, and remote operations.

Mission of the role

The mission of this position is to help deliver dependable communications capability where it matters most, including remote villages, difficult field conditions, and Alaska environments where systems must work reliably and consistently.

Key responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot communications systems
  • Support satellite, RF, and related field equipment deployments
  • Assist with technical problem solving in remote or changing conditions
  • Maintain professional standards during travel, deployment, and site work
  • Document work performed and communicate operational issues clearly

Minimum requirements

  • Strong technical aptitude and comfort with hands-on field work
  • Ability to work independently with limited immediate support
  • Reliable communication, professionalism, and accountability
  • Physical and mental readiness for travel and varied environments
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems calmly and effectively

Preferred background

  • Prior military service is strongly preferred, especially in communications, logistics, field operations, or technical specialties
  • Previous experience with telecommunications, RF systems, networking, satellite systems, or electronics support is preferred
  • Experience working in remote, rural, maritime, or logistics-heavy environments is highly valuable

Professional experience expectation

Applicants should be able to demonstrate meaningful real-world experience in technical, communications, or field-support work. Entry-level interest alone is not enough for this role. Applicants should present a professional background that shows dependability, technical maturity, and readiness for full-time field demands.

Technical scope of work

This role supports a wide range of communications systems and technologies across Alaska. Applicants should have familiarity with, or the ability to learn, the following systems:

  • Satellite communications: HughesNet, ViaSat, OneWeb, Starlink
  • Satellite television systems: Dish Network, DirecTV, and occasional Free-To-Air systems
  • Satellite telephony: Iridium, Globalstar
  • Two-way radio systems: handheld, mobile, and base station installations
  • Radio manufacturers: Yaesu, Kenwood, Icom, Motorola, Bridgecom Systems
  • Radio technologies: analog, digital (P25, NXDN), and trunked systems
  • Broadcast systems: LP-AM (Part 15), LP-FM, and high-power broadcast infrastructure
  • Networking and IT systems: business networks, servers, and RF-based transport (including Ubiquiti systems)
  • Maritime and aviation communications systems

Licensing requirements

  • FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) is required prior to application for all RF-related roles
  • GMDSS Maintainer License is required for maritime-related work
  • GMDSS Operator License is considered a strong advantage
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is required for any work performed in or around secured maritime ports
  • Additional relevant certifications (networking, safety, electronics) may strengthen an application

Alaska preference

Alaska residence and full-time work experience in Alaska are strongly preferred. Applicants who have lived and worked in Alaska for an extended period of time are at a significant advantage because of their familiarity with logistics, weather, remote conditions, and regional differences across the state.

Out-of-state applicants may still be considered if they can present a strong, credible case for being capable of working in Alaska’s harsh environment on a full-time basis.

Who should not apply

This role is not suited for applicants looking for routine, highly supervised, predictable work. If you are uncomfortable with travel, remote conditions, independent responsibility, changing logistics, or being held accountable for technical outcomes, this will not be the right fit.

What we are looking for

We are looking for disciplined, dependable people who can represent the company professionally, adapt to changing conditions, solve problems without excessive hand-holding, and contribute to mission-focused communications work across Alaska.
